How To Save Money On Gas

How To Save Money On Gas

Gas prices just keep going up, and our wallets keep decreasing in size. This how-to will teach you many ways to save money at the local gas station.

Steps

1. Take out a credit card. Some credit cards offer gas savings when you use the card for purchases. This works in much the same way that some credit card companies give you frequent flyer miles when you use their card for purchases.

2 Get a gas membership card. Look for membership benefits. In addition, department and grocery stores give discounts at the fuel pump when you use their store membership cards. Shopping at Giant Eagle grocery store and using their membership card, it’s possible (at the time of this writing) to fill a car’s tank for .79 cents a gallon, with savings of $1.36 per gallon.

3. Give your car a good tune up. While giving your car a tune up won’t actually save you money at the pump, it will save you in gas. Using less gas saves you money over all. Have the oil changed, and have a certified mechanic give your engine a twice over.

4. Check the WWW for deals. Web sites let you find the best deals in your area.

5. Buy a hybrid car. Not only do hybrid cars give you immediate savings at the pump, the U.S. government and your local state offer tax breaks for people that use gas saving cars. Federal deductions for using gas saving cars can be as high as $2000. If you can’t afford the growing number of hybrid cars out there, consider getting a regular car with good MPG (miles per gallon), like the Toyota Echo.

6. Turn off the AC. Running the car’s air conditioning puts extra strain on your car’s engine. This translates into you car eating up more gas per mile. Use less gas, save money. Depending on the car you drive, at highway speeds, the AC might put less drag on your car than if all the windows are open. Therefore, you might want to keep it cool on the highway.

7. Use the cheaper stuff. Most modern cars run just as well with the cheap gas as they do with the more expensive gas. In fact, engineers assume the car buyer is going to use the cheap gas, and so, they design the car’s engine accordingly.

8. Don’t fill the tank when prices are higher. Gas suppliers and gas station owners can charge high prices for gas because they know people will pay for it. The owners monitor how much gas people are putting into their cars each day. If they hike up the price a few cents and people are still filling up their tanks, this tells the owners that people are willing to pay the high price. Adding only a few gallons to your car when prices are high sends a message to the owners that people are not happy about the high prices.

9. Don’t drive. Don’t drive when you don’t absolutely have to. Carpooling, walking, taking the bus, and riding a bike not only saves you gas, but these are better for the environment and may be better for your health. Do you really need to drive to the store when it is only a couple of blocks down the street?

10. Check the tire air pressures weekly. Buy an inexpensive manual air pump and an accurate tire gauge (not a pencil gauge as they are not accurate). Keep all tires inflated to the same pressure as recommended for your car but not for your tire. Go by the sticker on the doorframe and not the tire wall.

11. Drive at a consistent speed and keep the windows up tight. Keeping the windows closed reduces the drag on your car. Sticking to the speed limit also helps. So, will using less gear changes and revving the engine less. Avoid accelerating fast or braking suddenly. Use cruise control when you can.

12. Clean out any unnecessary items in your car. If you have heavy objects in your car that you don’t need - remove them. If your car is lighter, it will use less fuel to get you to where you’re going.

13. Avoid leaving your car idle. If you are going to be stopped for more than one minute, you will save gas by turning the car off and restarting when you are ready to go.

14. Buy on cold days. Buy fuel on cold days and if you can, drive on the hot days. When you buy on cold days, and pay for volume, you buy more ‘mass’ of fuel for the same price. Never fill the tank completely or it will overflow when it becomes hotter.

Hypermilling Tips - Part Three

January 22, 2009 by admin

After a long silence, here is a few more tips for all, as part of our Hypermilling Tips series.

As we all know that hypermilling can be really effective in saving gas and money so learning hypermilling is good for all drivers.

Now, at least once a day or two we will have to refuel at the station. The thing is we can go refuel when it is not peak hours. In order to do so, you will need to find out when is the peak hours for the stations in your area. Then, work around your schedule and try to refuel during off peak hours. This will save you from lines, which means more saving on fuel.

Next, we have seen drive thru’s such as Mc D and KFC. While drive thru allows you to get your meals faster without having to park your car, walk into the restaurant, line up and order. However, on the other side, your car will be idling thus using more fuel than you expect.

Bad weather is unexpected. However, it is best not to drive in bad weather. Rain or snow will increase rolling resistance so stay indoor or get on the public transport to travel in bad weather. Since public transport will be on the road every day, every moment, so make use of it.

This is supposed to be a very useful for those who need to run errands from getting the groceries, sending kids to and fro school or go to the bank and so on. What you need to do is plan out your route when you are running errands. This is important because you get to minimise the journey length while getting things done.

So, with these additional tips for you to learn, which one do you think suits you best?

Hypermilling Tips - Part Two

January 15, 2009 by admin

This is the continuation of our hypermilling tips series. In this part, we will continue to discuss the hypermilling tips for better mileage and more savings on fuel.

Do you have a rack on your car roof? Usually this rack is to hold bikes but if you are not in need of this rack, you can take it off. Doing this will reduce the aerodynamic drag so you get more mileage or better fuel efficiency.

We have talked about tires before. Tires play a major role in helping us to save money on fuel. Properly inflated tires can help to improve fuel economy. Now, for those who live in countries with different seasons, be sure to track the temperature with your tire pressure as these two are connected in some ways.

Whenever you are travelling, keep track of your fuel consumption. This is important as motivation to save money on fuel and also to understand your driving habit. Cut down on unnecessary trips will indeed be helpful.

If there are roads less travelled, don’t be afraid to use those. The reasons:

1. Road less travelled = less cars so you get to use all sorts of hypermilling tips you have learnt.

2. More cars = less ways you can use to save fuel.

3. If you travel on busier roads, you might find yourself using up more fuel than the quiet roads.

Another tips is to leave early if you have to reach the destination by a certain time.

Leaving early gives you more time to drive accordingly in order for the fuel efficiency to work. If you leave in rush, you find yourself driving with all the bad habits and end up failing your goal to save fuel.

We will continue with more tips in the coming days. As for now, practice whatever you think is suitable for you lifestyle. Remember practice makes perfect!

If you are a mother of many children, you will have to send them to school, pick them up from school, go to the market to buy the daily necessities and food, pay bills and many more. In short, you will need a car to do all that.

If you can tweak a bit of your daily routine, you will be able to save more fuel and in the long run, more money.

You might ask, just how can I tweak my daily routine when I am so used to it?

First of all, are you an internet savvy user? If you are not, then perhaps you should learn a few things about the internet. If you are, congratulations, you are on your way to saving more fuel and more money.

First of all, you cannot abandon the idea of sending and picking up your kids from school and you will have to do you grocery shopping as well so this is what you can do.

1. You can first send your kids to school, then go to the market and do your shopping for as long as it takes until when it is time to pick up your kids from school and then head home.

2. If you need to pay bills, do it online. You can simply click a few buttons to pay your bills at the comfort of your home. There is no need to go out just to pay bills. Save more fuel and more money.

3. If you want to shop for clothing or non perishable goods, you can try online shopping. The best thing about online shopping is you might get free delivery depending on how much you spend.

4. If you are doing grocery shopping, maybe it would be best to do it once a week. This way, you can either leave your kids at home or bring them along.

5. As for daddy, the only way to save fuel is to take the public transport to work but for some it is quite impossible especially those who need to travel for meetings and all.

6. If you work from home, you can even save more but before you jump into the bandwagon, make sure you can provide enough for the family. There are many people working from home and this way you don’t have to spend on fuel to go to work.

Save More Money On Fuel When Travelling With These Tips

So, you have been planning that trip for weeks. Finally it is time to go and have fun. Suddenly, it hits you. How are you going to manage the fuel? Well, it is easy to have fun without having to burn a hole in your wallet especially on fuel.

If you are travelling by car, always make sure that your car is properly maintained. This include servicing your car in order to make sure that all the parts are working just as they should be. Make sure you wash your car as well to clean away the dirt on the body.

When you are driving, try to avoid using air conditioning to save some fuel. If possible use the vent so you don’t have to lower your window and increase drag. Drag will cause the car to use up more fuel that it is necessary.

However, the best way is of course to travel by public transportation such as train or bus if possible. If you are travelling alone, these might be better options because it is easier to travel alone. However, if you are travelling with family, it is still possible to make it to the train.

Using public transportation is always the best because no matter you are using it or not, it is always there on the road so why not use it and help to save the environment. Reduce the use of fuel and automatically you will reduce the carbon footprint on Earth.

There is always an option to save more money if you are willing to implement the tips in your life. Be open to the many options and do the best you can to save fuel and save the environment.

The Pros and Cons of Ethanol

October 7, 2008 by admin

Every day the researchers are working hard to find alternative fuel to replace the existing petroleum as there are less petroleum available and soon, we will have to rely on alternative fuel for cars and industrial use.

Ethanol is produced from agriculture so it is a renewable energy unlike the normal petrol. Of course, there are many more benefits that will help to save the environment as normal petrol destroys our planet faster. Below are the benefits of using ethanol as fuel.

1. Since ethanol is produced from agriculture, it is renewable unlike petroleum.

2. Ethanol produce less pollution and reduce smog-forming emissions by almost 50%.

3.  Ethanol also produce less green house emissions.

However, there are some disadvantages using ethanol as fuel.

1. Ethanol might be more expensive than the usual gasoline due to the production and location.

2. Ethanol is only available at certain areas especially the Midwest.

3. You cannot drive as far as a gallon of normal gasoline. By using ethanol, you have lower fuel efficiency and you need to constantly refill the fuel especially when you are on a long journey.

Of course, we must applaud the researchers for spending their time researching for renewable fuel and ethanol has the potential to replace the normal gasoline. However, more research is needed and one of the researchs for ethanol involves how to improve the fuel efficiency and save more with ethanol.
