Why You Cannot Self Service at Gas Stations in Oregon And New Jersey?

It might sounds weird but you cannot pump gas on your own at gas stations in Oregon and New Jersey. Why? Simply because it is illegal to do so. Apparently both Oregon and New Jersey have implemented the same law that prohibits public from self service at the stations. Instead, the task of pumping gas is given to none other than the owner, employees and operators of the stations.

You might think that it is easy for them to help you pump the gas. No, it is not easy at all. They have to undergo training to learn not to smoke or let the car engine idling when pumping gas. Seems to me that the authority in both states are not convinced that the public is capable to pump gas on their own without endangering their own lives and other people’s lives by starting a fire.

Of course, everything has its pros and cons.

In this case:

Pros: There will be more job opportunities available (for the position of operators and employees).

Cons: You will have to wait in line for a long time before your turn to pump gas.

Below is the excerpt from the Oregon’s law: Chapter 480 — Explosives; Flammable Materials; Pressure Vessels

480.330 Operation of gasoline dispensing device by public prohibited; aviation fuel exception. An owner, operator or employee of a filling station, service station, garage or other dispensary where Class 1 flammable liquids, except aviation fuels, are dispensed at retail may not permit any person other than the owner, operator or employee to use or manipulate any pump, hose, pipe or other device for dispensing the liquids into the fuel tank of a motor vehicle or other retail container.

Improve on Gas Mileage

With the rising cost of fuel, everyone is trying to stretch their money but how does one get the best value out of the money spent on fuel?

There are many ways you can increase your gas mileage.

1. Make sure the gas cap is in good condition. The seal must not be worn or broken. This is to prevent the gas vapour from going out thus wasting precious fuel.

2. Make sure you choose the right gas for your car. Gas with higher octane level will have very little benefit for cars made to run on regular gas.

3. Never let the engine idle for more than 15 minutes if you don’t want to lose up to a gallon of fuel.

4. Do not speed. Fuel efficiency drop when you speed.

5. Make sure you change the air filter if it is damage or clean it frequently to ensure it is not clogged.

With these simple steps, you can increase the gas mileage significantly. Still, the best way to save on fuel is to avoid unnecessary driving and use the public transport or simply walk around the neighbourhood.

US Price Fuel Below $4 Mark

July 28, 2008 by admin

The gas price in US has dropped below the $4 mark. Is this a good sign? No one is sure if the price will go down or up again but the price drop for the moment is a relief for most people.

It is reported that the price has dropped to $3.996 per gallon at most of the gas stations.

However, for mid grade and premium grade, the price is still above $4 with $4.13 and $4.24 respectively.

The cheapest gas station at this time is at Wichita, Kan. The price is $3.61 a gallon.

Still, we can all hope that the price will drop even lower but at the meantime, you might want to read up on ways to save fuel.

Magnet Can Help in Fuel Saving?

July 14, 2008 by admin

The fuel in US cost an average $4.1124 starting from July 11, which was an increase of 1.52 cents per gallon. This is definitely going to drive us crazy but there is a new discovery about magnets being able to help save fuel consumption.

Apparently, magnetic field has been used to improve the combustion of fuel dated back in the 1940s. This remarkable discovery is made by two Nobel Prize winners, Felix Bloch and Edward Mills Purcell in 1952 for their work in the magnetic field.

How can you save fuel with just using magnets?

One way is by attaching a magnet to the fuel lead pipe of your burner. The magnet allow a greater combustion thus produce more heat. If you have a very old boiler, you might want to install a magnet before you buy a new boiler.

Another advantage is by using the magnet to improve combustion, it means cleaner burn and it minimize the needs of servicing the boiler. Your boiler can last longer. While the magnet improve combustion of the engine, you get more mileage per gallon and a smoother running engine.

This may be a crazy idea but who knows whether it works or not if you don’t give it a try.

You get a cleaner engine, more mileage and save more money just by using a magnet that can last up to 100 years if it is a good magnet.
